Below are few ideas on how to make your basketball season a successful on when you are coaching your own son or daughter.
Make sure you are coaching basketball for the right reasons.
Are you coaching to help your child and others to become better? Are
you coaching to spend quality time with your child? Or are you coaching
because you can help your child make it to the NBA?
Have a talk to your child. LISTEN FIRST. Why are they playing
basketball? What do they think about the idea of you coaching? Talk
about why you would like to coach.
Establish some rules.
Let your son or daughter know that you will be treating them like every
other player on the team. And that you will be fair but firm when correcting
or disciplining them.
Have a meeting with the team and
the parents before the season starts. Outline your goals and
expectations for the season.
Enlist the help of your
assistant. Ask your assistant coach to make sure you don’t
show any favoritism towards your son or daughter. But just as important,
that you don’t go too far the other way also.
Be very
good at what you are coaching. No child wants their father
or mother to be the butt of any critics of the team.
Take off your coaches’ hat when your home. No need
to rehash every play or call at the dinner table. Relax and be a great
mom or dad. Spend some extra time away from the court just having fun
as a parent.
